[Bel Air, Maryland] May 16, 2011 – April 30 turned out to be a perfect springtime day for the first annual Clear Your Clutter Day coordinated by Harford County organizing company Sappari Solutions and the Harford Community College. The event drew 187 cars to the Fallston Parking Lot of Harford Community College to drop off a winter’s worth of clutter in the form of recyclable and reusable items.

Event partners Always Recycling, Friends of the Harford County Public Library, The Bel Air Lions Club,  Kleins-Shoprite, Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake and ShredInstead collected books, eye glasses, scrap metal, household goods, documents to be shredded, plastic bags and more, while Harford Community College student vOWLenteers were on hand to unload cars, direct traffic and clean up after the event.

Sponsors including Always Recycling, Harford Bank, the Harford County Office on Sustainability and the Harford Community College Sustainability Committee made the event possible with financial and in-kind donations, with proceeds in the amount of  $1,000 donated to local non-profit Harford Habitat for Humanity.

In addition to the collection of recyclable and reusable items, volunteers were on the lookout for the strangest item donated.  The winner, Michelle Cobbs of Joppa, brought a hand boiler, a handheld device that allows liquid to boil inside while merely holding it.  “I got it in middle school,” says Michelle, “I was really into science.”  Ms. Cobbs was the recipient of a month’s membership to The Arena Club in Bel Air.

Clear Your Clutter Day draws steady stream of cars

“We were aiming for 200 cars this first time around,” says event coordinator and owner of Sappari Solutions, Nettie Owens, “We had 187 cars come through.  I would say that is success!”  Exit surveys and positive comments at the event indicated that the majority of attendees would like to see this event happen again and were happy to have a one stop location to get rid of the clutter in their homes.  The downside was the inability to accept televisions at the event. “We hope to have an event partner available next year to accept TV’s and monitors, “ says Owens.
